After a super late surge to the podium thanks to Sebastian Vettel’s and Fernando Alonso’s tyre problems, Sergio Perez surges up the Twitter standings, overtaking Pastor Maldonaldo and back into sixth place. Perez did not enter the top five for the biggest increases this week, but two people that did enter were Brazilian duo Bruno Senna and Felipe Massa. Massa, who joined Twitter in March alongside Alonso, broke past the 100 thousand follower barrier with an increase of nearly six thousand followers week on week. At the end of the standings, Charles Pic again draws the short straw.

Even stevens in the Team placings, Ferrari still recording the biggest increase of the week, although McLaren recorded a higher than usual increase thanks to their victory last weekend. Toro Rosso, Williams and Marussia are all together, albeit at the opposite end of the increases.

Driver and Team statistics as of Monday 11th June 2012.

The Twitter outlook

After having a look at the entire field last week, with it being the end of the month, it’s back to the top 10’s this week as we begin June.

Drivers – The Top 10
01 – 966,071 – Jenson Button (McLaren)
02 – 831,893 – Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
03 – 610,868 – Fernando Alonso (Ferrari)
04 – 421,478 – Bruno Senna (Williams)
05 – 350,713 – Mark Webber (Red Bull)
06 – 204,596 – Pastor Maldonaldo (Williams)
07 – 200,715 – Sergio Perez (Sauber)
08 – 160,397 – Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
09 – 150,303 – Heikki Kovalainen (Caterham)
10 – 135,128 – Pedro de la Rosa (HRT)

Drivers – Biggest Increases
01 – 34,685 – Fernando Alonso
02 – 10,154 – Lewis Hamilton
03 – 9,964 – Jenson Button
04 – 7,278 – Mark Webber
05 – 6,002 – Pastor Maldonaldo

Drivers – Smallest Increases
01 – 440 – Charles Pic
02 – 798 – Jean-Eric Vergne
03 – 934 – Timo Glock
04 – 1,078 – Daniel Ricciardo
05 – 1,183 – Kamui Kobayashi

Two milestones were broken this week. Fernando Alonso broke the 600 thousand follower barrier, while both Pastor Maldonaldo and Sergio Perez broke the 200 thousand follower barrier. The biggest and smallest increases were fairly static and as expected this week, although I think this will be the last week that we see Maldonaldo in the top five for biggest increases. Up at the top, Jenson Button is creeping ever so near the one million follower barrier, and it looks like he shall break that towards the end of the month.

Teams – The Top 10
01 – 279,571 – Ferrari
02 – 194,434 – McLaren
03 – 130,103 – Mercedes
04 – 118,205 – Red Bull
05 – 109,722 – Lotus
06 – 75,483 – Caterham
07 – 65,997 – Marussia
08 – 65,556 – Williams
09 – 65,052 – Force India
10 – 56,109 – Sauber

Teams – Biggest Increases
01 – 4,248 – Ferrari
02 – 2,608 – Red Bull
03 – 1,927 – McLaren

Teams – Smallest Increases
01 – 468 – Williams
02 – 694 – Toro Rosso
03 – 743 – Marussia

Moving onto the teams, no surprises for the biggest increases, but I’m very surprised to see Williams record the smallest increase. Not quite sure why. Clearly as a team they have not had the “Maldonaldo effect” after Spain. They probably needed a good Monaco performance to follow it up with, but did not achieve that. Either way, less than a 500 follower gain in a seven day period is very poor. Force India, for the moment, remain behind them though albeit a cluster of less than 1,000 followers between seventh and ninth.

The Twitter outlook

It’s been a month now since I started tracking the Twitter followers for each driver and team. What I plan to do is to do a bigger post at the end of every month, with every driver and teams statistics in the post so I can compare month to month. So without further ado, below are the drivers statistics for May.

Drivers
01 – 956,107 – Jenson Button (McLaren)
02 – 821,739 – Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
03 – 576,183 – Fernando Alonso (Ferrari)
04 – 415,593 – Bruno Senna (Williams)
05 – 343,435 – Mark Webber (Red Bull)
06 – 198,594 – Pastor Maldonaldo (Williams)
07 – 197,260 – Sergio Perez (Sauber)
08 – 157,292 – Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
09 – 148,541 – Heikki Kovalainen (Caterham)
10 – 132,681 – Pedro de la Rosa (HRT)
11 – 120,937 – Paul di Resta (Force India)
12 – 105,100 – Narain Karthikeyan (HRT)
13 – 92,183 – Felipe Massa (Ferrari)
14 – 73,121 – Vitaly Petrov (Caterham)
15 – 69,797 – Timo Glock (Marussia)
16 – 68,346 – Nico Hulkenberg (Force India)
17 – 54,698 – Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber)
18 – 43,272 – Romain Grosjean (Lotus)
19 – 28,319 – Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso)
20 – 20,699 – Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso)
21 – 12,108 – Charles Pic (Marussia)

As I mentioned in my first post, the three drivers to be absent from Twitter are Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher. None of the three joined in May. The only jump in this chart comes from Pastor Maldonaldo, who jumps up from ninth to sixth, overtaking Perez, Rosberg and Kovalainen. Everyone else has stayed static in terms of position, but let’s see who has recorded the biggest and smallest increases.

Drivers – Increases
01 – 137,614 – Fernando Alonso
02 – 58,023 – Pastor Maldonaldo
03 – 43,324 – Lewis Hamilton
04 – 37,760 – Jenson Button
05 – 26,953 – Mark Webber
06 – 25,595 – Bruno Senna
Average driver = 21,324
07 – 20,842 – Felipe Massa
08 – 15,337 – Sergio Perez
09 – 11,966 – Nico Rosberg
10 – 10,942 – Paul di Resta
11 – 10,694 – Pedro de la Rosa
12 – 7,018 – Heikki Kovalainen
13 – 6,945 – Kamui Kobayashi
14 – 6,334 – Romain Grosjean
15 – 5,773 – Vitaly Petrov
16 – 5,508 – Narain Karthikeyan
17 – 4,609 – Daniel Ricciardo
18 – 4,130 – Nico Hulkenberg
19 – 3,651 – Jean-Eric Vergne
20 – 2,993 – Timo Glock
21 – 1,798 – Charles Pic

I’ve placed the ‘average driver’ in the respective position in the table, which is all of the increases bundled together to get an average driver increase. Only six drivers are above increase, which is partially down to the mammoth gains made by Fernando Alonso due to him joining Twitter only two months ago. Maldonaldo is the unsurprising large riser, again, due to his Spain win. The chart also helps to indicate popularity I feel, take for instance Heikki Kovalainen. He may be in a Caterham, but is definitely one of the more popular Formula 1 drivers on the grid this year, which is indicated by his increases compared to other drivers.

I’m not quite sure why Pedro de la Rosa is in tenth in both lists, I can only assume because of the Spanish Grand Prix that his increase has been fairly significant. He’s also a veteran in Formula 1, which may help. At the other end, it’s the two Toro Rosso and Marussia drivers that draw the short straw, Charles Pic only increasing his followers by 1,798 over the course of the month. Moving onto the teams:

Teams
01 – 275,323 – Ferrari
02 – 192,507 – McLaren
03 – 128,917 – Mercedes
04 – 115,597 – Red Bull
05 – 108,395 – Lotus
06 – 74,684 – Caterham
07 – 65,254 – Marussia
08 – 65,088 – Williams
09 – 64,177 – Force India
10 – 55,024 – Sauber
11 – 48,512 – HRT
12 – 40,665 – Toro Rosso

Due to their win in Spain, Williams jump ahead of Force India compared to this time last month. Apart from that, everything is fairly stable.

Teams – Increases
01 – 18,989 – Ferrari
02 – 11,240 – McLaren
03 – 10,229 – Williams
04 – 9,565 – Red Bull
Average team = 7,197
05 – 7,164 – Lotus
06 – 6,709 – Sauber
07 – 5,468 – Mercedes
08 – 4,344 – HRT
09 – 3,800 – Caterham
10 – 3,590 – Force India
11 – 2,812 – Marussia
12 – 2,455 – Toro Rosso

There is the saying the Formula 1 is a ‘team sport’, yet the average team increase is a third of that of the average driver increase. The increase for Ferrari is less than that of both of their drivers, which is the situation for the majority of the teams, apart from Lotus with Romain Grosjean and Marussia with Charles Pic. Fans are definitely more driver driven than team driven in terms of their loyalty, which appears to be supported by the Twitter statistics.

Removing the raw increases, the surprise above is Mercedes, I would have thought that they would have had a bigger increase than Lotus and Sauber, so for them to be in seventh is a fairly big surprise to me.

I will continue to track and post The Twitter Outlook on a weekly basis, with a larger post like this one at the end of every month. As always, comments, thoughts, agreements and disagreements are welcome.

The Twitter outlook

It’s week 4 of my Twitter outlook posts, so without further ado, let’s have a look at the Drivers’ tables:

Drivers – The Top 10
01 – 945,383 – Jenson Button (McLaren)
02 – 811,373 – Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
03 – 541,338 – Fernando Alonso (Ferrari)
04 – 408,900 – Bruno Senna (Williams)
05 – 333,411 – Mark Webber (Red Bull)
06 – 191,950 – Sergio Perez (Sauber)
07 – 190,271 – Pastor Maldonaldo (Williams)
08 – 153,744 – Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
09 – 146,056 – Heikki Kovalainen (Caterham)
10 – 129,927 – Pedro de la Rosa (HRT)

Drivers – Biggest Increases
01 – 30,324 – Fernando Alonso
02 – 14,630 – Pastor Maldonaldo
03 – 10,127 – Jenson Button
04 – 8,619 – Lewis Hamilton
05 – 6,903 – Mark Webber

Drivers – Smallest Increases
01 – 333 – Charles Pic
02 – 613 – Timo Glock
03 – 754 – Nico Hulkenberg
04 – 777 – Jean-Eric Vergne
05 – 1,173 – Vitaly Petrov

Status quo in the top 10, although Pastor Maldonaldo’s gain means that he will likely overtake Sergio Perez very soon. In fact, he probably already has by the time this post goes online. Fernando Alonso continues his usual big gains due to him joining Twitter only a few months ago, although inevitably his gains will start to slow at some point. At the other end of the table, Charles Pic again draws the short straw, once again picking up less than one thousand followers in the space of a week.

Teams – The Top 10
01 – 270,271 – Ferrari
02 – 188,482 – McLaren
03 – 126,845 – Mercedes
04 – 112,388 – Red Bull
05 – 105,888 – Lotus
06 – 73,397 – Caterham
07 – 64,243 – Marussia
08 – 63,879 – Williams
09 – 63,067 – Force India
10 – 53,068 – Sauber

Teams – Biggest Increases
01 – 3,500 – Ferrari
02 – 1,766 – Red Bull
03 – 1,734 – McLaren

Teams – Smallest Increases
01 – 517 – Toro Rosso
02 – 613 – Marussia
03 – 685 – Force India

The only change here is Williams have jumped in front of Force India, which I predicted last week. They have not overtaken Marussia though, so that part of my prediction was wrong. Their gain was a bit less than what I anticipated. Elsewhere it’s as expected, although a mention for Sauber – four thousand followers increase in two weeks. Not exactly a huge increase, is it?

The Twitter outlook – Williams and Maldonaldo benefit from Spain

Another week has passed since I monitored the Twitter account statistics, and with it a quite incredible weekend in Spain. A superb return to the top for Williams, followed by the horrendous events that unfolded in the Barcelona pitlane. How did Maldonaldo’s win affect the Twitter statistics? Keep reading to find out…

Drivers – The Top 10
01 – 935,256 – Jenson Button (McLaren)
02 – 802,754 – Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
03 – 511,014 – Fernando Alonso (Ferrari)
04 – 403,770 – Bruno Senna (Williams)
05 – 326,508 – Mark Webber (Red Bull)
06 – 189,083 – Sergio Perez (Sauber)
07 – 175,641 – Pastor Maldonaldo (Williams)
08 – 151,302 – Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)
09 – 144,711 – Heikki Kovalainen (Caterham)
10 – 127,932 – Pedro de la Rosa (HRT)

Drivers – Biggest Increases
01 – 45,866 – Fernando Alonso
02 – 33,690 – Pastor Maldonaldo
03 – 16,004 – Lewis Hamilton
04 – 10,348 – Jenson Button
05 – 7,341 – Bruno Senna

Drivers – Smallest Increases
01 – 599 – Charles Pic
02 – 921 – Timo Glock
03 – 1,286 – Daniel Ricciardo
04 – 1,297 – Nico Hulkenberg
05 – 1,406 – Narain Karthikeyan

Before I get onto a significant jump, three barriers have been broken in the past week. Lewis Hamilton has broken 800 thousand followers, Fernando Alonso has broken 500 thousand followers and Bruno Senna has broken 400 thousand followers. Unsurprisingly, the majority of the increases this week are bigger than last week, with it being a Grand Prix weekend. Only two drivers’ failed to gain over one thousand followers. Charles Pic only gained 599 followers while Timo Glock gained 921 followers.

Back up the front end of the grid and Fernando Alonso breaking the 500 thousand follower barrier can be attributed to a huge 45 thousand jump in followers week-on-week. Behind him, however, and we have ‘the victory effect’. After his win this past Sunday, Pastor Maldonaldo has jumped a mammoth thirty-three thousand Twitter followers, moving him up to 7th in the Drivers’ Twitter table and above Nico Rosberg and Heikki Kovalainen. A great performance is reflected in the jump, perhaps unsurprisingly.

Teams – The Top 10
01 – 266,771 – Ferrari
02 – 186,748 – McLaren
03 – 125,857 – Mercedes
04 – 110,622 – Red Bull
05 – 104,493 – Lotus
06 – 72,592 – Caterham
07 – 63,630 – Marussia
08 – 62,382 – Force India
09 – 62,309 – Williams
10 – 51,851 – Sauber

Teams – Biggest Increases
01 – 7,132 – Williams
02 – 6,512 – Ferrari
03 – 3,714 – McLaren

Teams – Smallest Increases
01 – 737 – Toro Rosso
02 – 899 – Marussia
03 – 1,261 – Caterham

From one of the smallest increases last week to the biggest increase this week, Williams jumped seven thousand followers compared to last week’s table, although they remained 9th in the overall standings. I expect them to overtake Marussia and Force India in this leaderboard when we come to have a look next week. No other surprises elsewhere here, Toro Rosso and Marussia are the two teams to fail to gain over a thousand followers week-on-week.
