Scheduling: The 2016 Canadian Grand Prix

Next weekend sees Formula 1’s annual June stateside trip to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix! Unfortunately for Formula 1, next weekend also marks the beginning of Euro 2016, heralding a summer of sport that also includes Wimbledon and the Olympic Games from Rio.

Sky Sports F1’s live coverage from Montreal sees the qualifying programme clash with Wales vs Slovakia and the build-up to England vs Russia, whilst the race itself on the Sunday clashes with the first half of Germany vs Ukraine. To be honest, from FOM’s point of view, you could not really schedule either qualifying or the race any differently: move qualifying to 18:30 UK time and you run into more of the England build-up, move the race to 18:30 UK time and you get into a clash with Poland vs Northern Ireland. Alternatively, what is worse: a double header from Monaco to Canada or a double header from Canada to Baku. I’ll let you decide…

Due to the aforementioned Euro 2016, BBC’s radio coverage is on the light side, with only updates from qualifying and the race itself covered on either 5 Live or their sister station. As if ratings have not dropped significantly already this season, I am expecting the percentage drops to be severe for Canada, also partially due to the fact that Channel 4’s coverage is highlights only whereas the BBC aired Canada live from 2013 to 2015. I fear for Channel 4’s numbers over the weekend, I really do. Like last year, Sky are simulcasting the race on Sky Sports 1.

Staying with Channel 4, their coverage of the World Endurance Championship begins on Saturday 11th June, with highlights of the first round from Silverstone at 06:35. Below are all the details you need.

Scheduling: The 2016 Berlin ePrix / Italian MotoGP

The penultimate stop on the 2015-16 Formula E calendar takes the championship to Berlin this weekend. It marks round eight of ten before the season concludes with a double header in London in early July.

On the Formula E broadcasting side, Allan McNish is co-commentator alongside Jack Nicholls due to Dario Franchitti’s Indianapolis 500 commitments. It is a replica of BBC’s 5 Live team with Jennie Gow presenting for ITV, the only difference is that Tom Clarkson has yet to get involved with Formula E! Due to Peston on Sunday, Formula E’s highlights programme on ITV airs slightly later than usual on Sunday morning at 11:00.

Speaking of the famous American oval race, BT Sport//ESPN will be covering both Indy 500 qualifying days live for the first time ever. The move is an attempt by the channel to boost their IndyCar coverage in response to feedback from fans. Elsewhere on free-to-air television, British Superbikes is airing live on Quest TV due to coverage of the French Open Tennis and the Giro d’Italia cycling tour on Eurosport.

On two wheels, Suzi Perry will not be presenting BT Sport’s MotoGP coverage due to illness. Below are all the scheduling details you need…

Scheduling: The 2016 Spanish MotoGP / Paris ePrix

The start of the European phase of the MotoGP season marks the return of Suzi Perry to the two-wheeled paddock. Perry returns to the MotoGP paddock as BT Sport’s new MotoGP presenter after a six-year absence, having been superseded by Jennie Gow as BBC’s MotoGP host in 2010.

Perry hosted BBC’s Formula 1 coverage from 2013 to 2015. The musical chairs following BBC’s F1 TV exit at the end of 2015 means that Perry is now back covering two-wheels, hosting BT’s MotoGP coverage from Jerez alongside Craig Doyle. It will be fantastic to see Perry back doing what she does best, and I’m glad to see that the movement has happened quickly on that front (although it does come at the expense of Iwan Thomas and Abi Griffiths).

Jack Nicholls is also a returnee this weekend, stepping back into his Formula E shoes ready for the inaugural Paris ePrix. The race will be shown live on ITV4 on Saturday afternoon with Jennie Gow presenting as usual. Given the fact that Paris is only a few hours in the Eurotunnel, it would have been nice for ITV to have some on-site coverage instead of studio coverage like London last season, but it looks like that is not the case, unsurprisingly I guess with low viewing figures for the series.

World Rally Championship highlights begin solidly on Channel 5

Highlights of the first round of this year’s World Rally Championship performed well on Channel 5 yesterday, overnight viewing figures show. The series, which was shown in highlights form on ITV4 from 2013 to 2015, moved to Channel 5 in a surprise move for the start of this season. The broadcaster has placed the series in a primetime slot, with highlights airing each Monday evening at 19:00.

The first programme of the year aired yesterday focussing on the Monte Carlo rally, averaging a solid 446k (2.1%) across the hour long broadcast. The programme recorded a one-minute peak audience of 533k (2.4%) at 19:53 as Sébastien Ogier fought off early competition from Kris Meeke before the British driver retired. Astoundingly, the last time a World Rally Championship round achieved a figure like that was at the back end of 2006. In other words, last night’s rating was the best for rallying in the UK for nearly a decade.

The viewing figures show how much rallying has fell out of the public spotlight: not necessarily the deals in the late 2000s with the move to ITV4 and then Dave, but after that with pay-TV deals exclusive to ESPN and BT Sport. Only in recent years has rallying got back in the spotlight with highlights airing on ITV4 and now Channel 5. The programme was slightly down on Channel 5’s slot average in 2015 (Mondays, 19:00-20:00) of 478k (2.4%), but the numbers above are a good starting base when you consider the low publicity surrounding it.

In comparison, BT Sport’s live coverage did not bring in many viewers. The highest average was 15k (0.3%) for the 08:00 segment on Sunday morning (24th January) on BT Sport 2. The low numbers should not be a surprise, but it demonstrates why series such as the World Rally Championship need a mainstream presence on free-to-air television in order to sustain a viable audience in this country, as channels such as BT Sport treat sports such as rallying as ‘schedule fillers’ and nothing more.

I applaud the series organisers for bringing the series back to the wider audience, and I hope Channel 5’s audiences increase as the year progresses.

ITV lose WRC highlights to Channel 5

Original article on January 5th – ITV has extended its respective contracts to broadcast highlights of both the MotoGP and World Rally Championship, The F1 Broadcasting Blog can confirm, except the latter it appears will also be shown on Channel 5.

Highlights of both series will be broadcast on ITV4. It takes their MotoGP deal into a third year, with this being ITV’s fourth season of covering the World Rally Championship.

An ITV spokesperson told this blog that they had “acquired” both contracts.

Update on January 8th – Well, well, well. ITV Press Office said the above to me on Tuesday. Except Channel 5 have tonight released programme information for the week beginning January 23rd. In it, there is a section entitled “World Rally Championship”, with a note at the bottom saying that Channel 5’s programming will be presented by John Desborough and Kevin Piper. I assume Channel 5’s coverage will be highlights only, but that is not made clear in the release.

What is also now unclear is whether ITV4 will indeed be broadcasting highlights of the World Rally Championship this year. I will chase that up and post as soon as I hear an answer…

Updated on January 11th – I have had an update from both ITV and Channel 5. A Channel 5 spokeswoman told this blog that their World Rally Championship programme “is highlights coverage. It will be on Channel 5.” The spokeswoman added that they were unable to confirm what day, but will be able to update on Wednesday when the final schedules for the Monte Carlo rally week are released. An ITV spokesperson gave a similar answer with regards the final schedules. But for the moment, it certainly appears that both channels are screening highlights of the World Rally Championship this season.

Update on January 15th – Confirmation from Channel 5 through a press release. The release notes that a preview show will begin tomorrow at 13:00 on Spike TV, whilst there will be daily highlights and live coverage of the Power Stage at the Wales Rally GB.

Update on January 19th – I have scoured ITV4’s schedules for next week and cannot find a mention anywhere of the World Rally Championship highlights. I think it is safe to say that they in fact do not have the rights, which is disappointing considering this site was told directly the opposite by ITV’s Press Office two weeks ago. Obviously I’m now somewhat concerned about the MotoGP rights too, so I will be chasing that with ITV as well.

Update on January 30th – ITV have apologised for the earlier error regarding the World Rally Championship rights. A spokesperson told me on Thursday: “We have had the rights to the World Rally Championship Highlights for a few years now, however, Channel 5 have now acquired the rights from this season. I am sorry for any disappointment caused. I have contacted our sports department who have advised me that we are hoping to have the MotoGP Highlights again this year.”

That last line is critical, as it means that ITV have not yet secured MotoGP highlights for this season. Could Channel 5 end up snatching them away from ITV as well?

Update on March 2nd – Highlights of MotoGP are definitely staying with ITV4. The channel has also acquisitioned highlights of the Superbike World Championship.
