Bahrain Grand Prix ratings drop versus 2012

Coverage of the Bahrain Grand Prix dropped on both Sky Sports F1 and BBC One versus 2012 last Sunday, overnight ratings show. Whilst the two channels averaged 4.24 million in 2013, the number is down on the 4.39 million average in 2012.

Sky Sports F1’s race coverage on Sunday averaged 656,000 viewers (6.1% share), peaking with 1.29 million (12.0%) at 13:20. Both figures are down on the 2012 numbers of 738,000 viewers (6.2%) and a peak of 1.6 million, following the trend seen so far this season where Sky’s figures are down versus last year. The race average itself was 1.19 million, compared with 1.4 million in 2012. The closeness in the average and peak figures again shows how Sky’s figures stay very stable during the race, but fail to bring any big peaks.

BBC One’s highlights show averaged 3.58 million, down on the 3.65 million versus from 2012. The figures are by no means a big drop, in the grand scheme of things it is fairly small compared to some of the huge drops we seen late last year for the Asian flyaways.

Overall, the 2013 ratings will be below 2010 which averaged a high 4.76 million viewers due to it being a season opener, but the weighted number for 2013 (892,000 viewers for 12:10 to 15:15 for Sky and 3.58 million for BBC’s highlights) is above 2009’s number of 4.39 million viewers. So whilst there was a drop versus last year, it is not a big enough of a drop to be concerned about and appears to within the usual year-to-year fluctuations for Bahrain.

  1. We have 819k for Sky’s 2012 coverage, meaning a drop of just over 20% from last year to this.

    So far they had an 18+% drop, 20+% drop, 9+% drop and a 20+% drop.
    Sky’s best performance (smallest drop) has been when the BBC has had a live race, I bet Sky wish the BBC had more live races now, as an average 17+% drop in viewers is hardly something not to be concerned about.

    1. The honeymoon period is over, Sky promised F1 fans something different and didn’t deliver, the channel is full of repeats, the pre and post shows are patchy with adverts and VTs cutting things off, and Lazenby and Pinkham (to name just 2), are awful.

      The big advantage Sky have is that people pay for it, and when people spend their hard earned cash, they’re less likely to criticise what they spend that money on, as it comes across as self criticism.

      The best thing about the F1 channel is GP2 and GP3, which the BBC didn’t show despite having the contract to do so. I believe if the BBC still had the full contract they would now being showing GP2, as they now show FP on BBC2.

      GP2 gets tiny viewers on Sky, which is odd when it’s supposed to be a channel aimed at the dedicated race fan, meaning that the majority of it’s viewers must be casual, confirmed by the drop in viewers for F1 qualifying and practice when compared to the race, where do all the avid fans go? Answer, they’re not there in the first place, or at least only a small number are.

      Year 3 may find the level of viewers, I can’t see it dropping much more, but then some people predicted that viewing numbers would increase in year 2, something I thought would never happen after watching Sky’s output.

      Average viewers this year looks to be heading for about 514k per race programme (unless you like counting channel hopping peak viewers rather than unique viewers).

      Having said all that, Sky could yet turn it around … Although the Titanic ploughed straight on into oblivion, only rearranging the Georgie Thompson deck chairs as the band droned on 😉

      1. If you have to have sky sports package to watch f1 next year which is a rumour. viewers could drop even more.
